Living With Tension Headaches, Migraines By Dr. Mario Gutierrez

Headaches

Are you suffering from frequent headaches? Are those headaches often worse in the afternoon or early evening? Does the pain originate at the back of the head, and then come around on both sides of the head? Does aspirin relieve the pain? Do you experience reduced neck movement with neck pain? If you answered yes to most of these questions, you may be one of the 15 million Americans suffering from tension headaches, the most common type.

Tension headaches have no obvious cause but stress may be the underlying factor. Stress can be brought on by bad posture, being out of shape, constant worries of a personal or financial nature, or work-related strains. Stress can cause the bones in your neck to lockup and neck muscles to tense. Reduced movement and tight muscles compress nerves that innervate the scalp, thus causing headaches.

Migraines, often misdiagnosed as tension headaches, are more severe headaches. Like tension headaches, they have no obvious cause. Stress, weather changes, menstrual disorders, missing meals, exposure to sunlight, lack of sleep, foods high in fat such as chocolate and nuts, and smell of perfumes are some triggers of migraines. Genetics or hereditary features of an individual may also play a role in migraines. Sufferers are usually female. Headaches are felt as throbbing pain on one side of the head. These last for about 30 minutes and usually followed by a disabling pain that lasts from several hours to one to three days. Aspirin has little effect. In some cases, there are visual changes, nausea and vomiting prior to the headache.

There are many ways to manage these types of headaches. These are a few things that you can do by yourself to reduce the pain and frequency of these headaches:

Stretching—To stretch out the muscles between the shoulder and neck (most commonly not engaged in stretching routines): a) sit, b) place right arm behind back, c) put left hand on top of head, d) pull head down then diagonally to the left, looking toward the left hip. Hold for 30 seconds. Repeat to other side. To increase the stretch, move downward the shoulder of the arm behind the back. Do two sets on each side with 30 seconds rest between sets.

Exercising daily—Exercise has shown to be beneficial for some headache patients. It opens up blood vessels, increases blood flow/oxygen to neck muscles and helps to relax them, thus taking pressure off nerves associated with tension headaches. Jogging or brisk walking at Rancho San Antonio with its scenic beauty and hilly trails make exercise more enjoyable.

Breathing ProperlyBelly breathing can be very effective in reducing stress. With belly breathing, when you breathe in, your stomach should move out as your chests expands. Place one hand on your chest and the other on your lower abdomen (belly). When you breathe in slowly and deeply through nostrils, feel both chest and belly rise; hold a few seconds. Exhale slowly and fully through mouth; hold a few seconds. Repeat 10 or more times.

Trigger Point/Compression Therapy—Apply firm pressure with the pad of your thumb at the base of the skull, or areas where it feels “knotted up.” Hold for 30 seconds, then release slowly. This helps relieve tension and pain.

Keep A Regular Sleep Routine—Avoid too little or too much sleep.

Proper Nutrition—For migraine sufferers, eat regularly and don’t skip meals. Ask your doctor about taking nutritional supplements such as Feverfew, 5-HTP, Omega -3, Calcium and Vitamin D, Riboflavin and multi-Vitamins/Mineral (containing Magnesium, Vitamins B2, B6). Avoid foods with tyramine (include aged cheese, nuts, wine).

Finding Triggers—Be a detective. Keep a headache diary. Record what you were doing or eating before your migraines occurred to figure out your triggers. Avoid these triggers specific to you. If migraines occur, seek a dark and quiet environment.

Staying Hydrated—Dehydration is a known trigger for tension headaches and migraines and perhaps the easiest one to avoid. About 5–8 glasses of plain or flavored water should keep you hydrated. Try drinking dehydrates like coffee and soda sparingly.

Hot/Cold—Apply heat (hot pad) either on the forehead, on back of the neck, or the mouth area when you feel your migraine is about to occur. Then, apply cold (ice pack) to the same areas to bring about a decrease in blood flow. It is believed that excessive blood flow results in actual headache. It does not hurt to try this out.

If you still suffer from constant headaches after trying many of the above recommendations, try chiropractic care. Chiropractic care has shown to have a significant positive effect in cases of headaches originating from the neck due to lock-up bones and tight muscles. It reduces the intensity of pain and, in one study, the number of headache hours by an impressive 69%. Not only can chiropractors provide active care plans such as exercise and stress reduction techniques, they can also restore movement in the neck with spinal adjustments to the neck bones. As a result, tight muscles attached to these bones can get stretched allowing them to relax, thus relieving the pressure on the nerves that causes headaches. Also, the adjustments increase nerve flow and oxygen to these muscles to further help them relax.

Chiropractors can also help reduce migraine headaches by relieving some tension in your neck and finding out your triggers. Under chiropractic care, 74.7% of migraine patients, in one study, improved significantly and the rate of improvement held up two years after the care ended.

Why suffer from these persistent recurring headaches when there is help available out there?

Contact your local chiropractor for more information.
